Postcard Project (2002)

Sister Schools of San Diego and other local partners are proud to announce the commencement of the Afghan Project. Four educators from Afghanistan spent the month of April in San Diego learning new technologies and connecting with students and teachers from San Diego City schools. The mission of the Afghan Project is to establish long-term relationships between schools in San Diego and schools throughout Afghanistan. This is an annual project! The theme for the 2002/2003 sister libraries project is peace, tolerance, diversity, understanding, and universal brotherhood. Each school creates a book to include poetry, prose, art or music. These books reflect the unique perspectives of the young authors and are colored with personal touches of their cultures. Classes then exchange the books, copies of which will be shared and housed in public libraries. Books may be in any language, accompanied by an English translation. Please click on this link for details on how to participate.

Students in San Diego, and their partner schools abroad sent messages of friendship, hope, and peace in celebration of US Department of Education's International Education Week. Please take the time to view some of the creative and personal greeting sent by our students. view postcards !!!

International Book Project 2001

The Sister Libraries project was expanded to include additional schools both here and abroad. The project theme is "Celebrations" and requires the students to submit works describing actions, feelings, and emotions that are experienced in celebrations of all kinds. Work may be submitted as prose, poetry, art, or music and each participating school will create its own book. In addition, the best two or three selections from each school will comprise the International Celebrations Book. Publication will be in printed form, posted on our web site, and distributed on compact disc. This is an annual project; contact us to join!

Sister Libraries (1999-2000)

Students in San Diego and their partner schools abroad created books about their cities, with the goal of exchanging and housing them in their respective public libraries. These books reflect the unique perspectives of the young authors and are colored with personal touches of their cultures. Written in several languages (Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, French, Pilipino, and English), these fourteen books offer an exciting reading experience to students in many of our sister cities.

Marsha Gould, Chairperson of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) traveled to San Diego to honor the participating schools and libraries. Because the partnership with Tijuana includes many libraries and schools, a special presentation was held in Mexico. Copies of the collection were sent to libraries in every participating country and will also be housed at the NCLIS.

Children's Walk For Peace

This successful event took place October 14, 2000 in Balboa Park. Its main goals were to educate the public about the United Nations Pledge for Peace, and to promote and raise funds for the Sister Schools program. We registered over 650 registered participants and hundreds of people signed the UN Pledge for Peace. We especially thank the many volunteers from high schools, universities, universities, and comunity organizations for their time and support. Without them the Children's Walk could not have been the success that it was!

Teddy Bear Transfer

This is a social studies project between Colegio Rio Branco-Campinas, Brazil, and King Elementary School in San Diego. It began when students in San Diego dressed a teddy bear in local garb and sent it to Brazil with postcards of local attractions, information about the school, students, and their activities. Rio Branco-Campinas students reciprocated in kind. Students from King and Rio Branco-Campinas continue to communicate with each other via e-mail.

As a result of this project, King Elementary was honored with a visit by the principal of Colegio Rio Branco-Campinas. Ms. America Bueno de Figueiredo visited the classes and reaffirmed her commitment to facilitating an ongoing relationship between the two schools.

International Science Project

San Diego High School science students teamed with students from Second Community High School in Warsaw, Poland to complete a multi-disciplinary science project. An Internet videoconference was held to open the project and to discuss and determine the specific topics. After completion and local presentations, a videoconference was held for students to share and discuss the results. This Internet collaborative program was unprecedented for both school districts in terms of the student participation and its unequivocal educational success.

Student Exchange Projects

Sister Schools has acted as a liaison and coordinator in student and teacher exchanges for Tijuana and Yokohama. During the summer of 2002, students from Suzhou, China visited San Diego. They stayed with host families, and visited many of San Diego's tourist attractions. The children enjoyed meeting each other and learning about each other's lives and cultures.
