Afghan Teachers Visit! Contact: Liz Hinkle, Ex Director Bashir Ghazialam, Middle East Programs WK: 858-728-2283 liz@sisterschoolsofsandiego.org bashir@sisterschoolsofsandiego.org http://www.sisterschoolsofsandiego.org Sister Schools of San Diego Brings Four Afghanistan Educators to San Diego – Welcome Dinner to kick-off Month Long Visit to promote San Diego-Afghanistan Partnerships San Diego, CA -- April 14, 2003 -- Sister Schools of San Diego (SSSD), a non-profit organization centered on cross-cultural understanding, in partnership with SDSU City Heights Community Technology Center, SDSU Interwork Institute, SDSU College of Education, Educational Technology Department and the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club will host a "Welcome to San Diego" dinner for four educators from Afghanistan. The San Diego community is invited to join us at the dinner, which will be held Thursday, April 17, 2003, from 6:00 – 8:00pm at the SDSU City Heights Community Technology Center, 42 Donations of $25 per person will provide much-needed supplies for Afghan schools. This event formally kicks off the teachers’ month long visit, which will include developing connections with San Diego City Schools and San Diego State University and completing computer training at the City Heights Community Technology Center. Participating San Diego City Schools include Preuss, Doyle, O'Farrell, Gomper's, SD School for Creating and Performing Arts, Scripps Ranch, Muirlands, and Hoover High. In addition to these established relationships, SDSU Interwork Institute & SDSU College of Education Educational Technology are exploring a possible distance learning program. -- more -- Sister Schools of San Diego Hosts Welcome Dinner for Afghan Teachers According to Bashir Ghazialam, Director of Middle East programs for SSSD, “This visit is an exciting opportunity for both the Afghan teachers and San Diego community members to learn about one another’s culture and develop lasting relationships. The teachers will have access to invaluable resources for professional development, and San Diegans will be able to not only learn about the fascinating culture of Afghanistan but also to learn how they may aid its reconstruction.” During their time here, the teachers will stay with American host families, explore landmarks and museums, and experience true San Diego culture. Two of our Afghan guests are university professors and two are high school teachers, one of whom is from Hashim Barat, the Sister School of Preuss School at USD. Their visit is made possible through a grant to Friendship Through Education (www.friendshipthrougheducation.org) from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary School Education. Sister Schools of San Diego is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding, conquering ignorance, and creating international friendships by connecting schools around the globe.
